The story

Hue Phases was photographed in one sitting on a single built set of mottled grey canvas, tall gold vessels, dried grasses, palm fronds and layered rugs. The five colours of the collection do the work. The set stays the same from frame to frame so the boubous read against it, first together, then one at a time.

The photographs

Group frames put the five colours side by side. Single frames give each boubou room to move, and the close portraits and details pick out what finishes each look, the bow at the chest, the stacked bracelets, the beaded caps, headbands and headwraps.
